Dean Olevsky, a native of Ukraine, has made a mark after two years as Dean of one of SDSU’s most innovative colleges, setting the bar high for its Engineering faculty and students.

SDSU’s top student researchers placed in three categories at the statewide competition, held this year in a virtual setting. Maricruz Carillo, a second-year doctoral student, placed first in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering category for her research on bone replacement techniques using ceramic materials and 3D printing.

For this episode of Fireside Charla, President de la Torre interviews three of the top SDSU's Engineering researchers: Dean Eugene Olevsky, Dr. Samuel Kassegne (Professor, Mechanical Engineering), and Dr. Mahasweta Sarkar (Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering).

For faculty leader, Dr. Janusz Supernak, the decision to support SDSU was easy. As a longtime faculty member and Chair of the Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering Department, he has worked with many loyal alumni and industry supporters.

The Particle Image Velocimetry Lab session was developed and taught by Dr. Xiaofeng Liu, Assistant Professor, SDSU Department of Aerospace Engineering, along with assistance from his graduate and undergraduate students. To date there are only 9 universities nationwide that have invested in this type of experiment.

SDSU is in the final stages of approval for the Construction Management Major (CONM) in the College of Engineering. The Associated General Contractors of San Diego has provided leadership and a $700,000 gift toward a goal of $2.5 million to establish the AGC Chair in Construction Management.

Graduating engineering seniors presented their innovative projects at the College of Engineering Virtual Design Day, held on May 6, 2020, with over 2,000+ participants from around the country and abroad.

The research of Dr. Julio Valdes, Professor, SDSU Dept. of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering, has been featured in the New York Times.

The grant is for 1.9 million from the CEC over 3 years. Dr. Chris Mi, ECE, is the PI on the project and other co-PIs include Dr. Sridhar Seshagiri, ECE. The University of California San Diego, and University of California Riverside are collaborators on the project. The project seeks to develop and integrate commercial scale PV systems with reliable and cost effective, repurposed electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
