Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the vibrant home to about 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students, several active and award-winning student clubs and organizations, multiple teaching and research laboratories, internationally-renowned faculty who are dedicated teachers committed to the success of students while leading cutting-edge research in the fields of bioengineering, design, energy, manufacturing, materials, mechatronics, and robotics and control by employing advanced experimental and computational techniques, and dedicated and committed staff.

The Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering program offered by the SDSU Department of Mechanical Engineering is a rigorous blend of theory with practical engineering fundamentals. The program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Student Spotlight



  • One of our students Utku Solmaz, was apart of the winning team from our 2025 Innovation Challenge program and they are now in the BRDG launchpad program receiving an additional 12 weeks of entrepreneurial coaching to launch a startup and guidance to pitch for funding. 
  • The Recent 2025 CoSMIC Space Mining Competition Awards: This competition included highly ranked NASA Lunabotics collegiate teams including Virginia Tech, University of Minnesota, New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of North Dakota and others. 
  • Alumni Eli Uva featured on KUSI News!
  • Mark Melikian was selected as the sole SDSU representative to the Western Association of Graduate Schools/ProQuest annual awards competition. This is the first year SDSU has participated, and Mark was chosen over all the applicants from SDSU in all STEM fields, not just engineering.
