Spring 2019 Outstanding Graduate: Kelbi Redquest
Apr 16Kelbi Redquest is a mechanical engineering student graduating in May 2019. She was a member of the Division I women’s rowing team for 2 years where she was recognized as a scholar athlete for all 4 semesters. She was also awarded the James Malik Award for Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 for earning a 4.00 GPA for these semesters while a member of SDSU athletics.
Spring 2019 Outstanding Graduate: Benjamin Bettencourt
Apr 16During his years at SDSU, he has been a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers since 2016 and was involved with Aztec Electric Racing during his sophomore year. For his senior project, Benjamin and his team members, known as Archimedes’ Crew, are building a custom 3D-printed quadcopter designed to house a crossband repeater that will utilize UHF and VHF frequencies.
ASME 2019 E-Fest West
Apr 16On March 15-17, members of ASME went to E-Fest West at the Fairplex in Pomona to compete in the Student Design Competition and the Human-Powered Vehicle Challenge. Our two SDC teams, led by chief engineer Dustin Ybarra, placed 5th and 10th out of 18 teams.
Spring 2019 Senior Design: Baja SAE
Apr 15Our Senior Design Project is to redesign and fabricate the primary unit of the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for the Baja SAE Car. The belt-driven CVT replaces a conventional gear transmission by using centripetal force to continuously change the “gear ratio” between the primary and secondary units.
Ph.D. Student, Vi Vu, receives 1st prize at the JDP Poster Session held at UCSD
Apr 12This is a study in Dr. Karen May-Newman’s Cardiovascular Bioengineering Lab. The lab’s objective is to improve the lives of patients with heart diseases through innovative approaches to medical device design and integration. One of the device that the researchers in the lab study is left ventricular assist devices (LVADs).
SRS 2019: Women in Engineering Award Recipient - Geovana Pessoa
Apr 12Geovana Pessoa is a Ph.D. student at the Experimental Mechanics Laboratory with research interest focused on fundamentally understanding the mechanical behavior of polymer matrix composites from the nano to the macro scale.
SRS 2019: Dean's Award, Engineering - Edwin Gonzalez
Apr 12Energy storage solutions are important to address the imbalance of renewable energy resources and the net energy demand in the state of California; an effect known as the “duck curve.” The presentation at the SRS was for a numerical code, modeling a rock-filled thermal energy storage system. This storage system was developed to be used in conjunction with a concentrated solar power combined cycle power tower plant. The numerical model of the hybrid solar combined cycle was previously developed at the Combustion and Solar Energy Lab.
Dynamic Systems and Control Laboratory (DSCL)
Apr 12Dynamic Systems and Control Laboratory (DSCL) focus is on a wide range of research efforts which include, but are not limited to, Nonlinear Modeling, Dynamic Analysis, Optimization (design, operation, and control), and Centralized/Decentralized Control of Multi-Robot Systems, Smart Flow Distribution Network, Magnetic Bearings, and Large-Scale Cyber-Physical Systems along with Machine Leaning studies.
M3 Lab
Apr 12Material is one of most important factors in mechanical engineering and design. In nature, materials have various length scales from macroscale (device level) to microscale (flaw level), and to atomic scale (fundamental level).
Dr. Beyene and Dr. Camacho receive award from Department of Energy
Apr 3A Research Award from the Department of Energy entitled, “Solar Energy / Energy Storage Discharge Models and Analysis of Regional Electricity Utility Usage Based on Interval Data” was awarded to the SDSU Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) directed by Prof. Asfaw Beyene with assistance from Prof. Joaquin Camacho.
