The Patti Grace Smith Fellowship, a non-profit program helping bring long-overdue diversity to the US aerospace industry, has announced its inaugural class of Fellows. Brandon Wells, SDSU Mechanical Engineering freshman, is one of 43 Black undergraduate students, to earn the 2021 Patti Grace Smith Fellowship. Each Patti Grace Smith Fellows earn a challenging internship at one of the nation’s leading aerospace firms, a living wage, two hand-picked personal mentors, and a cash grant of approximately $2,000 to go towards professional or school expenses.

An interdisciplinary Senior Design Project Team consisting of ME students: Matthew Gonzalez, David Bunson, Krysta Rhodes, Jesus Figueroa; and ECE students: Jonathan Maravilla, Alan Clemenson, Brandon Mosburg, Ryan Marmion, and Humood Alghunaim as team members, is one of 12 teams from around the country selected to be semi-finalists in the NASA Moon to Mars Prospecting Challenge.

Mechanical Engineering professor Amneet Bhalla is part of a team of researchers from San Diego State University and Northwestern University used the Comet and Bridges supercomputers to simulate inertial sea wave energy converter devices in collaboration with Polytechnic University of Turin.

Alex Mora, a 2004 ME graduate has made a $50,000 gift to establish an endowed scholarship for engineering students who participate in the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) program with a preference for Mechanical Engineering majors.

Material is one of most important factors in mechanical engineering and design. In nature, materials have various length scales from macroscale (device level) to microscale (flaw level), and to atomic scale (fundamental level).

On March 15-17, 2019 members of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) went to E-Fest West at the Fairplex in Pomona to compete in the Student Design Competition and the Human-Powered Vehicle Challenge.

SDSU Engineer, Dr. Randall German, Professor Emeritus, SDSU Mechanical Engineering Department, is sending experiments to the International Space Station to improve fabrication techniques in space.
