Bio
Dr. Kang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University and leads the Smart Manufacturing and Metrology Lab. He has a distinguished career in manufacturing metrology, with a particular focus on the application of AI techniques. Dr. Kang has made significant contributions to advanced manufacturing, including the development of real-time optical defect inspection systems and machine learning-based defect classification and characterization systems. His innovations have been successfully commercialized, notably improving manufacturing yields in Samsung's LCD production process. Dr. Kang's current research focuses on integrating sensors and AI techniques into advanced manufacturing processes, such as laser powder bed fusion, and exploring their applications in biotechnology. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and M.S. in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Electronics Engineering from Kyungpook National University. Prior to joining SDSU, he worked at Intel, where he developed optical proximity correction techniques for Intel’s current and future process technologies and received the Division Recognition Award.
