Dr. Sungbum (John) Kang

Bio

Dr. Kang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the director of the Smart Manufacturing and Metrology Lab since Fall 2019. He earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Management from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2015 and 2012, respectively. Before joining SDSU, Dr. Kang worked at Intel from 2015 to 2019.

While he was working for Intel, he developed optical proximity correction techniques for Intel's current and next generation process technologies and was awarded the Division Recognition Award for his valuable contributions. He has also worked for SNU Precision from 2005 to 2009 where he successfully developed and commercialized an optical inspection system for LCD manufacturing, which was sold to Samsung for approximately $1M.
