Senior Design Project Team Selected as Semi-Finalist in NASA Moon to Mars Prospecting Challenge
December 2020: An interdisciplinary Senior Design Project Team consisting of Matthew Gonzalez (ME), David Bunson (ME), Krysta Rhodes (ME), Jesus Figueroa (ME), Jonathan Maravilla (ECE), Alan Clemenson (ECE), Brandon Mosburg (ECE), Ryan Marmion (ECE), and Humood Alghunaim (ECE) as team members, with Dr. Scott Shaffar, the Senior Design Projects Instructor as mentor, is one of 12 teams from around the country selected to be semi-finalists in the NASA Moon to Mars Prospecting Challenge.
ME PhD Student, Shruthi Dasappa, awarded Fellowship and is selected as NSF Intern
December 2020: Shruthi Dasappa, a Ph.D. Student, who works under the supervision of Dr. Joaquin Camacho in the Flames, Aerosols, and NanoScience (FANS) Lab has received the Shah Family Entrepreneur Fellowship from UCSD and is designated as an Institute for Global Entrepreneurship (IGE) Fellow for the tenure of her study.
December 2020: Shruthi Dasappa has been selected as an NSF Intern to conduct an internship at Argonne National Lab in 2021.
ME PhD Student, Alexander Bertino, wins award and recognition at Dynamic Systems and Control Conference.
October 2020: Alexander Bertino, a Ph.D. Student, who works under the supervision of Dr. Peiman Naseradinmousavi in the Dynamic Systems and Control Lab was awarded the Best Student Paper at the 2020 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference for his paper titled, "Experimental and Analytical Decentralized Adaptive Control of a 7-DOF Robot Manipulator"
December 2020: The paper entitled "Experimental and Analytical Decentralized Adaptive Control of a 7-DOF Robot Manipulator" and authored by Alexander Bertino, Mostafa Bagheri, Miloslav Krstic, and Peiman Naseradinmousavi has been listed among the Most Read Papers in the Dynamic Systems and Control Conference Proceedings (DSCC).
Dr. Amneet Bhalla gives Invited Talk at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences
November 2020: Dr. Amneet Bhalla gave an invited talk on "Multiphase Flow Modeling: Control and Optimization of Wave Energy Converter Devices" at NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences on November 13, 2020.

September 2020: Dr. Bhalla's article entitled "Comparison of wave-structure interaction dynamics of a submerged cylindrical point absorber with three degrees of freedom using potential flow and computational fluid dynamics models" will be featured on the journal's homepage as an Editor's Pick.

Dr. Shaffar selected as recipient of inaugural SDSU Faculty Forward Award
August 2020: The inaugural SDSU Faculty Forward Award honors faculty instructors who demonstrated exceptional agility and dedication in transitioning their courses to the virtual environment during Spring 2020. Dr. Shaffar is the instructor of ME 490B: Senior Design, which is the capstone course in the Mechanical Engineering program.

Dr. Kevin Wood featured on front page of San Diego Union Tribune
June 2020: Dr. Wood, along with graduate students in his lab, have created a low-cost ventilator that could be used to help treat COVID-19 patients. The ventilators could be used in lower-income countries or if there is a surge in coronavirus cases. This ventilator is estimated to cost around $500, while high-end ventilators cost upwards of $50,000.

Dr. Wood creates ventilator to that could help treat COVID-19 paitents
April 2020: Dr. Kevin Wood designed the ventilator in just nine days, after hearing the government's urgent need for ventilators to treat people who have contacted the virus.
Dr. Bhalla's wave energy conversion research featured on multiple scientific and engineering outlets
April 2020: Dr. Amneet Bhalla, along with colleagues from Northwestern University, published a paper in the Journal of Computational Physics in December 2019, and has since been included on San Diego Supercomputer Center's website, NSF XSEDE homepage, HPCWire and the UCSD News Center website.
Dr. Yang's research featured on front cover of the Advanced Materials Interfaces journal
February 2020: Dr. Yang, along with colleagues from the University of Southern California and Arizona State University, had their research titled, "3-D Printed Cactus-Inspired Spine Structures for Highly Efficient Water Collection" featured in and on the cover of the journal of Advanced Materials Interfaces.
Dr. George Youssef awarded SAE Outstanding Faculty Advisors Award.
January 2020: Dr. Youssef selected as the recipient of the SAE Outstanding Faculty Advisors Award. This award recognizes the dedication and contributions to SAE and the Collegiate Chapter that the faculty advises for. Dr. Youssef will be presented with this award at the SAE Conference later this spring.
Dr. Youssef selected as 2019 Outstanding Engineering Educator of the Year
January 2020: Dr. Youssef was selected by the San Diego County Engineering Council (SDCEC) as Engineering Educator of the Year and winner of the prestigious Outstanding Engineering Educator Award for 2019. Dr. Youssef will be honored at the Annual Award Banquet at the end of February.
Dr. Naseradinmousavi appointed as Associate Editor for the 8th IEEE RAS/EMBS International Conference for Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics
January 2020: Dr. Naseradinmousavi has been appointed associate editor for the conference to be held in New York City from June 29 - July 2, 2020.
Fall 2019 ME Senior Design Day
December 2019: Our Fall 2019 ME Senior Design Day took place on December 10, 2019 at Montezuma Hall in the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. 24 ME Senior Design teams showcased their projects that they have been creating and working on since the beginning of the year.
