Biography

Dr. Kang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU) and the director of the Smart Manufacturing and Metrology Lab at SDSU. While he was working for Intel before joining SDSU, he developed optical proximity correction techniques for Intel's current and next generation process technologies and awarded the Division Recognition Award for his valuable contributions. He earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering and an M.S. in management from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on optical metrology and its integration in various advanced manufacturing processes. For example, he has successfully developed and commercialized an automatic optical inspection system for LCD manufacturing, which was sold to Samsung for approximately $1M. His research interests also include machine vision, machine learning, 3D printed biosensors, biomaterials characterization, and powder-based additive manufacturing.
